Step by Step Recycled Papermaking

Here is the step by step process we used to make paper at the Seattle Mini Maker Faire:

Choose some colorful clean paper scraps and tear them into pieces.

Add water to the blender up to where the finger is pointing (about 1/3 of the blender)

Push the button and grind the paper scraps into pulp!

Place a cookie cutter shape on a screen over a covered tub with holes drilled or a second stiffer screen on top of a bowl so the water can drain. Pour pulp into the cookie cutter shape. It's fine to spread the pulp with your finger if needed.

After water has drained lift the shape off.
Cover the shape with another screen and use fingers to press more water out.

Use a sponge to remove more water.

Gently peel off the top screen. If paper sticks, lay it back down, sponge out more water and try again.

Place a dry piece of paper on top of the wet paper shape.
Flip the whole stack over, gently peel off the second screen and admire your new piece of recycled paper! Depending how thick the new paper is, it will dry in a few hours or usually by the next day.

Feel free to use the contact form for questions or information about any of my art adventure workshops.

Mini Maker Faire Handmade Paper Recycling Magic

It's fun to teach at festivals. We transform old paper scraps and junk mail into new handmade paper with a few simple tools. I also teach in classrooms, libraries, and can bring this fun project to birthday parties and other events.
Please use the contact form at the right to schedule an event or request information on detailed paper making project lesson plans I've created. Fascinating paper making science and history are included.

Good Green Fun!
How to make paper - DO try this at home!

The essentials of making paper are:
  1. Grind fibers into pulp using a blender and water.
  2. Pour the pulp into a mold and drain the water out.
  3. Press out as much water as possible with screens and sponges.
  4. Dry the paper overnight.
Making paper is a great DIY project! Use the contact form for any questions or to schedule a paper making demo or hands-on activity for your school or group.

To waken dream-drenched wrapped in the flower garden of this quilt is bliss!

This is a haiku by my mom - the poet Jane Davis Carpenter. I've stitched these words into several of my quilts. Her book of poetry "What to Make of Silence" is available on Amazon here.

Quilt in progress!

Lots of purples laid out all over my studio for a double sided King sized duvet cover.

Turtles in the stitching!

Here's another quilt made upsidedown! It's sewn from the back to create a stitched motif on the front of the quilt. My customer loved the turtles she saw while snorkeling!

Sunflowers Quilt

I quilted this quilt from the back. My customer wanted an all over sunflower design in the stitching.
